My partner has TB. Can I get infected? Should I be worried?

Well, there is a risk of getting infected.

TB is caused by bacteria which is transmitted through infected droplets in the air. The most common ways through which it is transmitted are coughing and sneezing. Hence, it is advisable for anyone who has TB to cover their mouth when they’re coughing or sneezing. And also for those who are with a TB patient.

You do not get TB through kissing, hugging, shaking hands, or sharing food or water. You need to be closely exposed to an active TB patient before you catch it. Prevention is a must if your partner is an active TB patient. Make sure you cover your mouth to prevent breathing in the bacteria. If you’re having a cough that has lasted for more than 3 weeks, chest pain, night sweats, chill, fever, loss of appetite, or weight loss, you should get yourself tested ASAP. Remember, TB is completely treatable and has a high success rate in India.
